Carbon Removal

We are committed to halving our emissions before 2030 and achieving net zero before 2050. Carbon removal plays an important role within our overall strategy. The Millhouse woodland project allows us to offset future, hard-to-eliminate operational emissions such as those generated by natural gas for heating, diesel for transport, employee commuting and business travel.

Nature Based Solutions

The UK needs to plant 32,200 hectares of new woodland every year, equal to around 53.2 million trees, for the next 30 years to meet its net zero aspirations. This totals approximately 1.5 billion trees. The Scottish Government is aiming to plant 18,000 hectares per year by 2024, equivalent to 30 million trees annually, increasing woodland coverage from 19 percent to 21 percent of total land area.

To support the long-term ambition to decarbonise both our business and the wider economy, we have made a significant investment in a verified carbon offsetting project in Scotland. This forms part of our goal to deliver a business that has minimal environmental impact and a positive contribution to the communities we operate within and the customers we serve.

Local Offsetting

We believe emissions should be sequestered as close as possible to where they are generated. That is why we have invested in woodland creation in Argyll and Bute, less than 25 miles from our production sites in Central Scotland. This local, nature-based approach helps us reduce our footprint while supporting our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.

FSC Certification

In addition to carbon removal, we are committed to responsible sourcing of the materials used in our paper-based packaging. McLaren Packaging became FSC accredited in 2017, and we extended this certification in 2022 to cover all products manufactured at our Port Glasgow site.
This enables our customers to demonstrate that they are sourcing their solid board and corrugated divisions and fitments in a way that is both as ethical and sustainable as possible.
